History From Below was founded in 2024 by me, Emanuela, a Clerkenwell and Islington Guide with a passion for London‘s Social History. Originally from Italy, I have been living in London for over 20 years and my background is in Art History.

In 2023 I joined the Black Mary Project as the local historian and researcher.

The Black Mary project aims to re-imagine the history of Mary Woolaston, a Black Woman who is said to have run a healing well in Clerkenwell during the 17th Century.

The project is supported by Arts Council England, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Mayor of London Untold Stories fund, Black Womxn In Theatre, and Camden Council.

Our work will be showcased at the Wellcome Collection in London from June 2025.

I specialise in walks around Clerkenwell, one of the first parishes to develop just outside London’s city walls during the Middle Ages and therefore becoming one of the historically richest and most interesting districts in London.

During my walks I share my passion and knowledge about the local history and the untold stories of ordinary (sometimes extraordinary!) people that lived in Clerkenwell throughout the Centuries.

I offer Guided Walks in Clerkenwell and Islington, both Public and Private, for individuals or groups. The tours can be in English or Italian.

Join me on a walk to find out more about the less known history of Clerkenwell and Islington.
